Local Knowledge
Driving Tips for Gotemba / Camp Fuji
Exit at Gotemba IC (#7), then turn right onto Route 401 toward Camp Fuji. The base is about 5 km from the IC (10 minutes).
The Tomei Expressway between Tokyo and Gotemba is heavily congested on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Use Shin-Tomei as an alternative.
Gotemba area gets significant snowfall in winter. Snow tires may be required December-March. Check NEXCO Central road conditions.
For Hakone, exit at Gotemba IC and take Route 138 south. The Hakone Skyline is a separate scenic toll road (about 250 yen).
Mt. Fuji climbing season is July-September. Expect extreme congestion on surrounding roads during peak weekends in August.
The Shin-Tomei (E1A) has 120 km/h speed limit sections — faster and smoother than the original Tomei for long-distance trips to Nagoya.
