Before You Drive

1

Check Your ETC Card

Ensure your ETC card is not expired. Check the expiration date printed on the front of the card. Cards typically expire after 5 years.

2

Insert Card Properly

Insert the ETC card into the OBU (On-Board Unit) with the IC chip facing up (or as indicated by your device). Wait for the confirmation beep or voice message.

3

Verify Card Recognition

Your OBU should display a green light or play a confirmation message indicating the card is properly recognized. Do NOT proceed if you see a red light or error.

At the Toll Gate

⚠️ Important: Slow down to 20 km/h (12 mph) or less when passing through ETC gates!

1

Find the ETC Lane

Look for lanes marked with purple "ETC" signs or "ETC専用" (ETC-only). Some gates have "ETC/一般" lanes that accept both ETC and cash.

2

Approach the Gate

Slow down as you approach. The antenna will communicate with your OBU automatically. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

3

Pass Through

When the bar lifts and you hear a beep, proceed through. The toll display will show the amount charged. Your OBU may also announce the toll amount.

Understanding ETC Lane Signs

Many toll gates are transitioning to ETC-only lanes. Look for these colored signs:

🟣

ETC専用

ETC Only Lane

Purple sign - Use if you have ETC card & OBU installed

🟣🟢

ETC/一般

Mixed Lane - ETC or Cash

Purple/Green sign - Both ETC and cash accepted

🟢

一般

Cash Only Lane

Green sign - Stop to pay cash (no ETC)

Note: Many toll gates are converting to ETC-only ("ETC専用"). Some newer gates may only display "ETC" text signs without colored indicators. Always slow down if unsure and look for the overhead lane indicators.

After Your Trip

  • Remove your ETC card from the OBU to prevent theft
  • Store the card in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Check your usage history online through your JapanETCcard dashboard
  • Do not bend or scratch the IC chip on the card
