One of the biggest advantages of using ETC in Japan is access to various discount programs. These discounts apply when you pass through toll gates with your ETC card. Eligibility and actual savings vary by road operator, route, time, vehicle class, and discount program.

🌙 Night Discount (深夜割引)
The night discount applies when you're on the expressway anytime between midnight and 4 AM. Great for long-distance travelers or early morning commuters.
📅 Weekend & Holiday Discount (休日割引)
Perfect for weekend trips! This discount applies to passenger vehicles traveling on NEXCO-operated rural expressways (not urban expressways).
🔄 Metropolitan Loop Discounts
Special discounts for traveling through major metropolitan areas:
Shuto Expressway (Tokyo)
ETC 2.0 provides additional discounts for vehicles that use the outer ring road instead of cutting through central Tokyo.
Hanshin Expressway (Osaka-Kobe)
Similar bypass discounts available for routing around the central corridor.
Nagoya Expressway
Environmental zone discounts for cleaner routing through the Nagoya area.
💎 ETC Mileage Service
The ETC Mileage Service is a points program that rewards frequent expressway users. Points accumulate based on toll payments and can be redeemed for free expressway travel.
How Points Accumulate:
- • NEXCO roads: 10 points per ¥100 spent
- • Metropolitan expressways: 100 points per ¥100 (varies)
- • Points can be exchanged for toll credits
Note: ETC Mileage Service requires separate registration at the NEXCO website. JapanETCcard customers are eligible to register their cards for this program.
Important Discount Notes
- ⚠️Discounts vary by region: Not all discounts apply to all expressways. Metropolitan expressways (Shuto, Hanshin) have different discount structures.
- ⚠️Vehicle class matters: Some discounts only apply to standard passenger vehicles, not large trucks or motorcycles.
- ⚠️Discounts don't stack: Generally, only one discount applies per trip segment.
