Driving Tips for Osaka & Kansai
The Hanshin Expressway has tight curves, short merge lanes, and complex interchanges. Study your route before driving — GPS navigation is essential in the Kansai urban expressway network.
Rush hour in Osaka (7-10 AM, 5-8 PM) causes severe congestion, especially around Higashi-Osaka JCT and the Meishin connection at Suita. Plan trips outside peak hours.
The Hanshin Expressway uses different toll systems than NEXCO. Your ETC card works on both, but discount programs differ. Hanshin uses distance-based pricing for ETC users.
For Kansai Airport, use the dedicated Kansai Airport Expressway from Rinku JCT. Allow 60-90 minutes from central Osaka including potential traffic delays.
During Expo 2025 (May-November), expect significant congestion on expressways leading to Yumeshima Island. Consider public transport for Expo visits.
Kobe is easily accessible via Hanshin Expressway Route 3. The Hanshin-Kobe area has many foreign-friendly restaurants and international schools.
Parking in central Osaka is expensive and limited. Most facilities charge 300-600 yen per 30 minutes. Consider park-and-ride options near suburban expressway exits.
Winter driving in Kansai is generally mild, but trips to northern Kansai (Maizuru, Fukui) or the Japan Sea side may require snow tires December-March.
