ETC Go vs. Standard ETC
Understand the differences between Standard ETC and ETCX (ETC Go) in Japan. Learn why JapanETCcard provides Standard ETC cards.
Understanding ETC Options in Japan
There are different types of ETC services available in Japan. Here's a comparison to help you understand which option is best for your situation.
Important: ETCX Still Requires an OBU Device
Despite some misconceptions, ETCX (ETC Go) still requires an On-Board Unit (OBU) device installed in your vehicle. ETCX is not a "phone-only" or "app-only" payment system — it works in conjunction with your ETC hardware.
The key difference is that ETCX allows certain local toll roads (not NEXCO expressways) to be paid through the ETCX app system. However, not all card providers support ETCX functionality.
JapanETCcard Notice: Our ETC cards currently do NOT work with ETCX local roads. Our cards are designed for full NEXCO expressway coverage with all standard discounts and mileage benefits.
Standard ETC
Traditional ETC Card Service
Best for: Regular expressway users, long-term residents, SOFA personnel, business use
ETCX (ETC Go)
App-Linked Toll Payment

What Roads Does ETCX Cover?
ETCX is primarily designed for local toll roads and parking facilities that are not part of the NEXCO expressway network. Examples include:
- •Some local toll roads operated by prefectures or cities
- •Certain parking facilities with ETCX integration
- •Drive-through payment at participating locations
Note: For NEXCO expressways (which make up the vast majority of toll roads in Japan), Standard ETC is the primary payment method. ETCX is a supplementary service for specific local applications.
Why JapanETCcard Provides Standard ETC
At JapanETCcard, we provide Standard ETC cards because they offer the most complete service for foreign residents in Japan:

Future Updates: We are monitoring ETCX development. If significant expressway integration occurs, we will evaluate adding ETCX compatibility. For now, Standard ETC remains the best choice for comprehensive coverage.
