Driving Tips for Iwakuni
The Sanyo Expressway between Iwakuni and Hiroshima is well-maintained and mostly 4-lane. Speed limit is typically 80-100 km/h.
Hiroshima IC connects directly to Route 2 and central Hiroshima. For Hiroshima Station, use Hiroshima-Higashi IC instead.
To visit Miyajima, exit at Hatsukaichi IC or Ono IC, then drive to Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal (about 10 minutes from the IC).
The stretch from Iwakuni to Shimonoseki follows the scenic Inland Sea coast. Several service areas offer good food and rest stops.
Rush hour around Hiroshima (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM) can cause significant delays, especially near Hiroshima JCT. Plan around peak times.
Typhoon season (August-October) can cause expressway closures. Check NEXCO West alerts before long trips during this period.
