Driving Tips for Misawa
Misawa-Towada-Shimoda IC is your primary expressway access. Exit and follow Route 338 for about 15 minutes to reach the base POL Gate.
The drive to Tokyo takes approximately 7 hours via Tohoku Expressway. Plan rest stops — major service areas are at Maesawa SA, Adatara SA, and Nasu-Kogen SA.
Winter driving (December-March) is serious in Aomori. Snow tires are mandatory and chains may be required. NEXCO East posts winter road conditions online.
The Hachinohe area has excellent seafood markets. Hasshoku Center near Hachinohe Station is famous for the 'Nokke Don' build-your-own rice bowl.
Lake Towada and Oirase Gorge (about 40 min from base) are spectacular in autumn (October). The road gets crowded on weekends during peak foliage.
Aomori's Nebuta Festival (early August) causes major traffic congestion. Plan to arrive a day early or use the Shinkansen from Hachinohe Station.
