Driving Tips for Tokyo
The Shuto Expressway is notoriously complex with short merge lanes and tight curves. Study your route before driving — GPS is essential.
Rush hour in Tokyo (7-10 AM, 5-8 PM) causes severe congestion on the Shuto Expressway. Allow extra time or travel outside peak hours.
Parking near embassies in Minato-ku and Chiyoda-ku is extremely limited and expensive. Consider rail for commuting within central Tokyo.
The Shuto Expressway has a different toll system than NEXCO expressways. ETC works on both, but discount programs differ.
For Narita Airport, the Higashi-Kanto Expressway via Bayshore Route is usually faster than surface roads. Allow 90 minutes from central Tokyo.
Yokota Air Base is best accessed via the Chuo Expressway (Hachioji IC) or the Ken-O Expressway (Iruma IC). Avoid Route 16 during rush hour.
